Overview
3,000 teams entered. Motion design decided who won.
MangroveDAO faced a defining moment: stand out among 3,000+ teams competing for the Blast Big Bang's largest developer airdrop allocation. The format was unforgiving. A 3-minute video demonstration judged live on stream by top crypto investors, where technical innovation had to translate into compelling visual narrative. One chance to prove their DeFi protocol deserved placement alongside industry leaders.
The competition wasn't just about showcasing features. Judges would live-stream their reactions, making every second of presentation quality as critical as the technology itself. Winners would gain immediate exposure to 100,000+ users, direct investor access, and ecosystem validation that could define their market position. Adding complexity: the product wasn't live yet, requiring me to design and animate the entire UI experience in After Effects while collaborating closely with Mangrove's Product Team and CEO to ensure every detail accurately represented their vision.
My creative direction bridged the gap between technical depth and investor engagement. By structuring content for live judging reactions while maintaining sophisticated visual language, the video positioned Mangrove as a premium DeFi solution worthy of flagship status. The result: selection as one of 47 winners and the largest individual developer allocation in Blast's history.

Role
Motion strategy, illustration, and the visual case that won the room.
Motion Strategy
Developed the visual positioning for MangroveDAO's competition submission. In a 3,000+ team field, technical merit alone would not differentiate. The motion design needed to function as persuasion: making the project feel inevitable, funded, and already in motion before a single line of the pitch deck was read.
Illustration
Created bespoke visual assets that communicated MangroveDAO's protocol mechanics and value proposition without relying on the generic DeFi visual language (floating coins, abstract gradients, blockchain node diagrams) that every other team was likely using.
Motion Design
Animated the submission assets with pacing and craft calibrated for a judging panel, not a social feed. Different audience, different attention dynamics, different definition of what "impressive" looks like.

Stages
Challenges & process
Stage 1: Decoding the Competition Format Understanding that judges would live-stream their reactions fundamentally shaped the creative approach. Every frame needed dual purpose: capturing attention for real-time reactions while building coherent narrative structure. The opening moments became critical, requiring immediate visual impact that would generate positive judge responses without sacrificing story setup.
Stage 2: Strategic Content Hierarchy With three evaluation criteria (concept, execution, Blast-native features), content structure became the foundation for success. I frontloaded Mangrove's unique value proposition to hook judges early, then demonstrated technical superiority through clear visual comparison, concluding with differentiation from competitor protocols. This hierarchy ensured that even partial viewing would communicate core strengths.
Stage 3: Visual Language for Investor Audience The target audience wasn't general users but crypto-native investors deploying significant capital. This demanded sophisticated visual execution that demonstrated both creative excellence and deep protocol understanding. Motion graphics emphasized yield mechanics, technical innovation, and protocol efficiency rather than simplified user journeys, speaking directly to decision-makers evaluating technical merit.
Stage 4: Optimizing for Live Judging Dynamics Created intentional pacing that accommodated judge commentary without losing narrative thread. Strategic visual emphasis and pause points allowed for reaction moments while maintaining momentum. The technical demonstration remained crystal clear even if audio was partially obscured, using visual hierarchy and motion to carry meaning independently of voiceover.
Outcome
First place. Largest airdrop in Blast history.
Largest Individual Allocation: Secured the biggest developer airdrop in Blast's history among all winning projects
Top 47 Selection: Chosen from 3,000+ competing teams through rigorous video-based judging process
100,000+ User Exposure: Featured as flagship protocol to entire Blast user base at mainnet launch
Direct Investor Access: Established connections with top crypto investors actively deploying millions in Blast-native dApps
Ecosystem Leadership: Positioned alongside major industry players like Ambient Finance and Banana Gun as competition winners
Strategic Marketing Asset: Video success extended beyond competition, serving as primary tool for ecosystem partnerships and user onboarding during critical mainnet launch phase
Business Development Impact: Competition victory directly translated to funding opportunities and strategic partnerships that accelerated protocol growth
The creative approach proved that in high-stakes technical competitions, storytelling quality creates measurable business value. The video didn't just win a competition, it became the foundation for Mangrove's market positioning and growth strategy.
